Biography
SVARTSOT was founded in 2005 as Denmark’s first folk metal band, and have since been instrumental in establishing the Danish folk metal scene. The band’s unique style is the
bastard offspring og the meeting between folk and medieval music’s catchy melodies and the raw energy of death metal. Whilst rhythm guitar, bass and drums lay a solid foundation to the
authentic tones on mandolin, bagpipes and whistles, the lead guitar builds a bridge between the two worlds.
SVARTSOT’s growled and predominantly Danish lyrics are inspired by old tales from Denmark’s wealth of folklore and history.
After releasing the demos Svundne Tider (2006) and Tvende Ravne (2007), SVARTSOT released three albums on Napalm Records: Ravnenes Saga (2007), Mulmets Viser (2010) and maledictus eris (2011).
The album Vældet (2015) was released as a collaboration between the band’s own brand, Of Wood And Iron Productions, and the Hungarian label Nail Records. In 2022 SVARTSOT released a collection of reinterpreted folksongs and medieval ballads on the album Kumbl, which was released on the Danish label Mighty Music. As part of SVARTSOT’s 20th anniversary in 2025, the band’s sixth album, Peregrinus, recorded by legendary Tue Madsen at Antfarm Studios, was released on Mighty Music.
The album cover was created by the artist Frederik Jensen, from the Danish band Thus, and with photography by the award-winning photographer Lars Roed.
SVARTSOT is now an established band on the folk metal scene in both Danmark and abroad, having played concerts at festivals and on tours with the majority of the biggest names in the folk metal world, and throughout most of Europe. The band has performed at Wacken (DE), Graspop Metal Meeting (BE), Ragnarök Festival (DE), HRH Vikings (UK), Copenhell (DK), Roskilde Festival (DK), Motocultur (FR), Folk Summer Fest (RU), 70000 Tons of Metal (US), Sabaton Open Air (SE), Metalfest (CZ) and many other festivals. SVARTSOT has attained a reputation as a live band with the fans in focus, where concerts are a unique festive experience set to the tones of brutal yet melodic folk metal.
